Legislative Action

NYSUT: New York State United Teachers

Visit NYSUT's Legislative Action Center: Politics impacts every school district and public higher education institution, and the working conditions of every school employee, because laws and regulations affecting every member's terms and conditions of employment are passed by lawmakers and implemented by government agencies in Albany and Washington, D.C. The union's Legislative Department drafts, introduces and lobbies for bills affecting state aid to schools and colleges, licensure, tenure, occupational health and safety, education standards, health care, pension and retirement.

Member Action Center: The MAC is here to help make your voice heard and to build a movement around the priorities that matter most to all of us: education, healthcare, and issues that affect us all as working people. The only way for this to work is through member registration. Select the MAC link. Once there, all you need to do to register is enter your email address. You will then begin to get emails/texts when NYSUT needs you to log on to contact your local legislators through sending faxes and emails. That process is almost as painless as the initial registration. You will be asked to input information including your name and your home zip code. The rest is done for you.

AFT: American Federation of Teachers

Become an AFT e-Activist: You will be part of a powerful network that connects you to the union's political and legislative program. When visiting AFT e-Activist join other who are Reclaiming the Promise. Our public schools represent our nation’s commitment to helping all children dream their dreams and achieve them. A high-quality public education for all children is an economic necessity, an anchor of democracy, a moral imperative and a fundamental civil right, without which none of our other rights can be fully realized

NEA: National Education Association

Visit the NEA's Legislative Action Center: Take action on specific issues/legislation. Also, become a cyber-lobbyist and subscribe to our weekly e-mail newsletter. Visit the NEA's Education Votes site to share your story and read about other actions you can take to make sure your voice is heard on the issues that matter the most.

AFL-CIO: American Federation of Labor—Congress of Industrial Organizations

Visit AFL-CIO's Legislation and Politics site and take action at their Action Center. Working men and women have strength in numbers and the goal of the AFL-CIO’s legislative and political efforts is organizing that strength to win the good pay, retirement security, safe work environments, broad access to quality education for our children and much more. By mobilizing through the union movement’s state-level and nationwide get-out-the-vote effort, union members elect candidates who support and will enact a working families’ agenda.

HVALF: Hudson Valley Area Labor Federation

Visit the Hudson Valley Area Labor Federation (HVALF) to support local labor issues. Founded in June, 2001 as part of the New Alliance Movement, the Hudson Valley Area Labor Federation represents 113,000 union families across seven counties: Columbia, Dutchess, Greene, Orange, Rockland, Sullivan and Ulster.  Their goal, working with partner Central Labor Councils (CLCs), is to lay the foundation for a more visible and bold labor movement that reflects the hopes and dreams of working families in the Hudson Valley.

“Elections belong to the people. It's their decision. If they decide to turn their back on the fire and burn their behinds, then they will just have to sit on their blisters.” (Abraham Lincoln)

“Democracy cannot succeed unless those who express their choice are prepared to choose wisely. The real safeguard of democracy, therefore, is education.” (Franklin D. Roosevelt)

“Reader, suppose you were an idiot. And suppose you were a member of Congress. But I repeat myself.”
― Mark Twain
